Interpolated Rotoscoping:
Is that a photo, or is it a drawing?
It's both!
DGA kids are learning Interpolated Rotoscoping techniques. Interpolated Rotoscoping are two big words that mean "sketching over a photo to make it look like a drawing from a graphic novel". It's a technique used in the movie A Scanner Darkly.
Students chose a photo, then used Adobe Illustrator to apply the technique.
The project takes patience and a couple of weeks to complete.
Step One: Inking or outlining the main subject in the photo
The student used Adobe Illustrator to trace around the man's body with black ink.
Step Two: Swatches of color, that match the colors in the original photo, are then applied.

Color swatches are visible on the left side of the screen. The original photo is on the right. |
